Matter of Survival

The past is not something to be taken lightly.  It is one of the few things we should be able to learn from with a degree of documented understanding.  The traces of our physical and cultural history are important markers in the definition of the paths we have chosen and the identity we now value.  These values give indication of the importance of traditions, but they also give indication of the need for change.  Sustainable cities need to critically weigh the legacy, both good and bad, of human settlement and natural environments if we hope to preserve the best of both.  Our heritage is not just something to fill museums, it is essential to the health of our world.
